So, long story short: you’ll have to make a judgment call on this one . Will this cleaner warp the edges of my laminate floors?
As long as you use a fine mist and wipe it up afterwards, the cleaner won’t have a chance to really penetrate and do any damage. No, this cleaner is meant to clean, but not shine your floors. Adding olive oil to white vinegar and applying a thin coat to your wood floor will restore its shine. The oils do give a nice scent, and they also provide some extra disinfecting power.
If the vinegar is just way too strong for you, and you don’t know what else to do, try making a vinegar enzyme cleaner . Store in a cupboard, and give the jar a good shake every few days. I used this cleaner on my wood floors, and it left a white film on the floors. This is a common issue if you do choose to use this cleaner on your hardwoods. The vinegar in the homemade solution will react to the ingredients in the commercial cleaners (waxes, oils, etc.), and leave a film or streaks. To be safe, avoid any laminate/wood floor cleaning products that say “shine” on it. If possible, seek the professional help of a licensed aromatherapist. I mean, it has soap in it, don’t you have to do another mop rinse with just plain water?
You can find more info on each ingredient in the original post here. I would like to make an all-around cleaner that was also the toilets and bathrooms.
We use baking powder with a regular vacuum for normal cleaning. Is the rubbing alcohol and dish soap safe to use with a baby crawling everywhere?
You can of course leave it out or decrease it to suit your needs. But if your floors are lighter in color or more textured, you won’t really miss it. I believe protecting your family from harmful chemicals doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Bloggers like myself and others are only sharing this info as helpful advice, so we cannot be held responsible if something you’ve tried didn’t work like it was supposed to.
I can tell you to do some spot testing and possibly alter the recipe to play around with the ratios a bit. Because of the way this cleaner is used, the floor never really gets “wet” since it gets wiped (and dried) right away. A minimal amount of olive oil rubbed into your wood floor is all that is needed to maintain the luster of your wood floor. What is the best way to use this all-purpose cleaner?
No, you can most definitely use this recipe without adding the essential oils. If you don’t have the essential oils on hand, go ahead and make up the recipe, but you will absolutely notice a difference (at least in the scent) when you do add the oils. Simply add some orange or lemon peels to a jar, then top off with vinegar. After 2 weeks just strain it and use that vinegar in this recipe – it will smell amazing!
The problem is not so much from the homemade solution, but from the commercial cleaners that may have previously been used on your floors. It will take a few times of using the homemade solution for the vinegar to cut through and break down whatever has built up on the floors from the commercial cleaners. Another issue that might be causing the white film or “cloudiness” on your floors may be the minerals in your hard water . I spray in little sections, clean with the microfiber cloths, and it looks great.
You can purchase them online or find them at your local health food store.
I use it to clean my sleep apnea equipment on a weekly basis. As for the soap in the solution, you’re adding literally a few drops of soap to 2 cups of liquid, so the amount of soap is small enough that you don’t need a rinse. Then on the sponge you’re using to scrub the door, sprinkle some baking soda on the sponge, and a squirt of soap to help speed up the scrubbing process.
You just don’t want to add too much because you’re not rinsing this away afterwards. Some work better than others on different types of flooring. I first started using this, when my oldest was just starting to crawl. If there’s dirt stuck in the grooves, you might need to get down on hands and knees to scrub it out (had to do that on the laminate in our new rental when we moved – not fun!). In addition to the cleaning properties, it’s really there for the darker or smoother floors because it dries without leaving streaks. And it’s only a few drops of dish soap so it’s a very negligible amount and no soapy film!
My 3 Ingredient Homemade Nontoxic Cleaner Recipe by trashisfortossers.com
If you wouldn’t take a shot of windex, why would you use it to clean a surface you cook your food on?

Be careful using it on marble and granite because it etches, meaning the acidity of the vinegar eats away at the surface of it. My husband forbid me to use nothing but natural ingredients for cleaning. Also, it would make sense to look for a castile soap that is not made with palm oil. I stand them up in a jar to make sure they properly dry which keeps them looking and feeling their best!
Think about it, between setting your food down on your countertop, showering, brushing your teeth – you’re going to most likely ingest or come in very close contact with the products you use to keep your home clean. Use rags, cut up old t-shirts and reusable cleaning towels instead of paper towels. And you can steep orange and lemon peels in your vinegar to give it a nice citrus scent.

Washing away these trails will confuse them and make it more difficult to find their favorite places. The type of food they look for is either sugar or protein, it depends on what the needs of the colony are at the time. Once you’ve determined what they’re hungry for, set out a few baits with their choice. Slather it on a piece of paper, a plate or in a covered container with holes.
You could also use glass jars sealed with lids–just poke holes in the top lid. Don’t be diligent washing away their trails, you want them to find the bait spots easily again and again.
You may find that a sugar bait will be popular for a few days, then a protein one is needed as they switch to protein foods. If you’ve set out both types (sugar and protein) yet they are attracted to neither, reduce the amount of boric acid used until they starting feasting on the bait. This is why it may take several days of laying out fresh bait regularly–you’re trying to get enough poison into all the colonies to wipe out the whole lot. Cover your legs and wear rubber boots if possible, they will be streaming out of the nest while you’re doing this. Pour large amounts of cider vinegar down inside the ant hill.Repeat over three days (and pour over surrounding area as well to prevent them from rebuilding in the area). Pouring boiling hot water into the nest is effective on its own but you could also try adding an ingredient (as shown above) to make the remedy more powerful. Do three times the first day, then at least once a day for the next three days.
You could also try liberally covering the mound with one of the repellents listed below (cinnamon, salt, etc.). If it’s winter (below freezing) and your home has ants, you likely have a nest inside the house. Make sure to wipe up spills immediately and wipe off counters, tables and stovetops regularly leaving no crumbs behind.

Take out garbage regularly and wash out all food packaging and pop bottles before putting in the recycle bin. If it’s dry outside and there’s not a nearby water source, they will be inside on the hunt for water. Success of the repellents can depend on the species of ants in your home. Fill a baking pan with water and set the pet food dish (or potted plant, etc.), in the middle. If it’s a potted plant that’s infested, repot the plant in a fresh pot of soil, washing roots clean of previous soil. Straight vinegar sprayed on the ground around the house can help too (both methods may harm grass and plants). Probably the most effective naturally occurring protective powder, this is a great option if their nest is underneath a deck or patio and sidewalk blocks. Further protection is provided by the powder’s property of repelling many insects. In all of these examples it is important to place a small amount of the powder in corners, cracks, crevices and other areas where insects might hide. Adults can ingest very tiny, minuscule particles of food (larger pieces are filtered out), but their diet is from the liquid that the larvae provides. They aerate the soil, clean up scraps and seeds, control termite populations and they’re a food source for birds and other insects. If you prefer encouraging them to move elsewhere instead of killing them, make your home their last choice for foraging by using the above control methods and tips. I was told that they took it back to the colony and after they ate it and drank some water it would kill them.I have tried it on the little ants and it seems to have worked on them too. I ground it up in a clean coffee grinder, then simply sprinkled the powder over the ant hills. After doing a deep cleaning especially kitchen in every cabinet, stove, baseboards, under fridge vacuuming all the time it was time to start with the home safe remedies. Spray was water, 91% rubbing alcohol, peppermint oil, dawn dish liquid & started by spraying & cleaning every day several times a day to deter the ants & made kitchen smell good. I see some dead in window sills remember to clean & put fresh baking soda maybe every 2 or 3 weeks.
We seem to get a fair number of them inside our house and my three daughters scream when they see them.
We still have ants and the mice are sticking around. The interior space of your dwelling place becomes part of their colony. It’s not necessarily the talc it’s the powder that gets in their lungs. Workers make up approximately 10% of the colony and it’s their job to go out, find and collect food then bring it back to feed the rest of the colony. If it’s getting cold outside, they also like to settle in to find shelter. Making your own cleaners with the above ingredients also adds a repellent that they will avoid.
You want poisoned food brought back to the nest for the rest of the colony to ingest. This is why a “tried and true” recipe that came highly recommended doesn’t work for you, the bait holds no interest for the particular critters in your home. Leave a sample of each bait out and see which ones they go for.
You want them to live and take big juicy pieces of poisoned bait back to the nest for the rest of the colony to feast on. If you have kids or pets in the home, set the bait in covered plastic containers with a few holes poked in the sides. For strong attraction, smear a bit of non-poisoned bait on top of the lid so they’ll find it easily. Lay the bait in areas where you see regular activity and near their points of entry if you know them.

Do this around the surrounding area as well, for at least three days. Bring water to a boil, mix in salt to make a strong salt solution and pour down nest. Pour slowly into nest so the water has time to get into all the tunnels and surrounding soil. The best time to do this is when the ants are moving up closer to the earth’s surface (when it’s not too hot or cool). Although a sloppy environment will attract them, having them in your home doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a poor housekeeper–they could be after water. They’ll find it in houseplants, sinks and drains, pet water dishes and cups left out containing liquids. The theory is that since they are repelled by these items, they’ll turn back. Either keep food sealed until needed or surround it with a water barrier so they can’t get to the food. Mixing in a little liquid dish detergent with the water will be a strong repellent as well as prevent the water from becoming a water source for them.
You can try submerging the pot in a bucket of water for about 15 minutes to make them flee, but this won’t remove larvae that may be present. Otherwise, wrap branches and pipes with a sticky substance that will trap them before they can find their way in (duct tape facing sticky side out should do it). There will be a soap residue left on the surface as the water evaporates, hopefully enough to deter them from crossing it. Sprinkle this in the cracks that they will have to crawl up through. The result being that the insects lose water rapidly, dry up and die. It’s suggested that they will “explode” when the food would expand inside them as it comes in contact with stomach fluids. As with all creatures, they play an important part in a healthy planet. Now my pets can lay in the grass and not have to worry about ant bites. Within a few days, the ants were gone and the hills soon disappeared!
I do know that powdered yeast and sugar, mixed together does cause the ants to explode when the drink water. I sprinkled baking soda under stove & fridge, all window sills, and made a spray for cleaning. It took weeks because of the infestation but finally got rid of them in kitchen. It is a lot of work but it puts a smile when the kitchen area has no ants. Hey—could we get a similar article on spider control?
Put the grits on parchment paper, spray it with borax/water mix…this way it kills the ants and poisons the mice. There are also a number of spices and strong smelling things they avoid, such as dish soap and vinegar. It’s a great way to keep roommates from eating your strawberries.
The Secret To The Absolutely Best Soap Recipe by modernsoapmaking.com
A perfect soap formula cleanses without being overly drying, and has just the right amount of skin nourishing oils and additives. These factors can ultimately change what the perfect soap recipe is for me versus what you think is the best soap recipe. Check out my soap making tutorials to see if a recipe strikes your fancy, like this recipe featuring avocado or this one using coconut milk. Lathering hard oils include oils like coconut oil, palm kernel oil, babassu oil, and murumuru butter. They say turmeric has three colours, yellow, orange and red. If you underdid the lye, chances are your soap would not set and get hard enough to cut, it would be oily and runny, cracked and leaking oil. Add titanium dioxide to the other half or just leave it natural. If you always infer the percentages as a percentage of oils, then do that, for the sake of consistency. Too many of them, and they are all far too small, so there is hardly any oil to find at all. I tried by using lactic bacteria tablets crushed in sugar and added water. So don’t believe those who say you should dump in some cornstarch in the lye water for that luxurios feeling. Something can be meant for another use than to fragrance soaps, and as long as they are skin safe (preferrably sold to be used on the skin), they are good to go (as long as they don’t fade to much, have added ingredients that will not go together with soap and this and that). How do you measure hard oils if it calls for 12 oz of coconut, shea butter, etc is it weighed in it’s hard form or melted?
The important thing is that you do weigh them rather than using volume measurements. Hard oils are oils that are solid at room temperature, soft oils are liquid. It creates a rock hard bar of soap that is long lasting (but not too long lasting!
I like to lather a soap in my hands (while you might like to use a loofah. Furthermore, what your customers feel is the best soap recipe might be wildly different, too. Do you have any other tips or tricks to formulating the best soap recipe you want to share?
But there are also a lot of soap safe colours to use – those who doesn’t change much or at all, or changes to a nice colour. So if a turmeric coloured soap stays red after curing, well, then it must be a lye heavy soap. They say that clays in different colours do not change at all in a soap. If you still get the zap then it is probably lye heavy and not a good batch.
You don’t want to use that, but it can be fixed by doing a rebatch. Otherwise, let the soap cure (harden) for 8 to 9 weeks before you use it.
You can get a pretty bar by dividing your batch in half at light trace and adding clay to one half. Alternate pouring them in your mold, and then do a simple swirl. The colors of clay are all earth tones, so not bright colors, but done with a white or off white swirl they look really nice. To make soap here, the only option is castile, sunflower, rapeseed or coconut (if you want a way too expensive soap). Sodium lactate can by the way be made by lactic fermentation of sugar. But they all smell very syntetic and chemical, and very “short”, like not any depth or anything.Essential oils does often not smell nice out of the box, sort of. Because it should exist many aroma chemicals that are very close to true sandalwood.
